Chaos and mayhem are how one campus officer described what happened ahead of ESPN’s College GameDay.
Auburn University released a statement following the incident where fans trampled security personnel and caused multiple injuries.
Auburn said that they usually allow students to line up over a period of time outside the arena. However, temperatures dipped to dangerously low levels, causing a change in the traditional pregame plans and what happened was a disaster.
“Extreme weather conditions during the week forced Auburn to make the difficult decision to disallow the traditional premier match-up camp out which occurs in Jungle Village and instead decided to allow students to line up gradually,” the statement read. “As temperatures deemed a camp-out to be unsafe, the student line was announced to open at 6:30 a.m., prior to doors opening for students and fans at 7 a.m.
But upon the opening of the line, a group of students rushed around the side of security, forcing their way through and pushing past security, injuring some of them.
“Those students began jumping barricades to gain entry which impacted the students trying to enter the barricades in an orderly fashion.
Onsite medical staff reported a few minor injuries which were addressed locally by EMS. Auburn is reviewing feedback and video footage from the line to develop plans for future games to ensure student safety.”
“Let me preface this by saying that I love Auburn, that being said, this is the worst way we could’ve done this,” Auburn fan Brent Jordan wrote on Twitter, reacting to the video of students sprinting inside the fences. “Multiple reports of broken noses, legs, wrists, etc. multiple trampled victims, and just overall a terrible experience for everyone involved. I would’ve taken frostbite from camping in ‘extreme cold temps’ over this any day.”
Auburn University said that the situation is being investigated.
