Federal Law Enforcement Are Making Arrests Locally

Law enforcement, and ICE agents moved across Mobile and Baldwin Counties during the past forty-eight hours making dozens arrests of illegal immigrants.
At this time, we do not know if local law enforcement were involved but Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch confirmed that federal forces are in the area searching for wanted persons and people who are in the country illegally.
“They were out working yesterday picking people up,” says Burch. “There will be teams picking people up as they are able to identify known criminals who are here illegally.”
Right now, the focus seems to be on those with criminal records that go well beyond simply entering the country illegally and Burch says he and his office are ready to help.
“We will work with them and assist them anyway we can, with personnel. If need be, I’ll make room in the jail for them until they are processed and sent back.”
Last week, in a news release, the Department of Homeland Security announced a policy change, acknowledging those places that the former administration put off limits such as churches and schools are no longer off limits for ICE and other federal enforcement agencies.
“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,” the DHS release states. ” The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement and instead trust them to use common sense.”
Locally, that does not sit well with some school administrators or community members.
School board member Johnny Hatcher says rounding up illegals is not their job, education is.
Reportedly, on Monday a Central Office employee circulated a memo to another group of employees, advising them to tell concerned parents that their children are safe at school for now and to let her know if they see ICE agents at or near a school.
However, some have said that the memo was not authorized and neither Baldwin or mobile school leaders have yet to step forward with any policies or procedures relating to possible federal raids on local schools.
At this time, there also has not been any official statement from area law enforcement on how they will interact with ICE or what level of cooperation will be given during raids or arrests.
