Chaos erupted in a small Northwestern Alabama town when a crazed 911 caller threatened to bring his guns down to the police building and start shooting.
Florence’s Chief of Police Mike Holt said at a press conference that a 911 caller had called several times spewing threats before keeping his word and showing up outside of the police station at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
The gunman died in the parking lot when officers returned fire, Holt said at a press conference.
“An individual called 911, said that he was at the police department, and that he was going to shoot the place up,” Holt said.
Chief Holt told reporters that when officers responded to the threat they confronted an armed man, who fired shots and officers returned fire and the suspect was killed and later identified as Jackson Paul Jones, 33, of Florence.
Officers responded from within the police station and from patrol vehicles according to the chief.
Holt said he “had no idea” why the suspect called 911 to warn police of his arrival.
The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office will lead an investigation of the shooting, he said.
Florence is about 115 miles northwest of Birmingham.
