BELFOREST COMMUNITY, Ala. Several people driving southbound on State Highway 181 Tuesday morning just before 8 a.m. noticed heavy black smoke pouring out of a commercial building on the west side of the road and called 911 as did employees of a nearby business.
Troy, one of those employees working nearby, said he noticed the smoke and then some flames as he was getting out of his vehicle and it was really starting to roll out over the top of the pull-up doors, so he called 911.
The fire brought multiple fire departments including the Belforest Volunteer Fire Department, Daphne, Fairhope, Loxley and others as part of an automatic mutual-aid response while other firefighters also provided fire coverage for the departments that had responded to the fire scene.
Belforest firefighters, who were the first to arrive, said that there was heavy smoke and flames rolling out of the building when they arrived on scene and that they quickly popped open the doors and began an internal attack on the fire.
“Fully involved. A lot of black smoke showing,” Belforest Battalion Chief Ethan Bertagnolli said. There was no one inside at the time that the fire broke out, according to firefighters.
According to another business owner nearby, one side of the building did golf cart repairs and there are multiple other businesses on both sides of the metal framed structure. Some of those businesses suffered smoke and water damage and have been left without power and may not be able to reopen for a week or more.
At this time the fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

GULF SHORES, Ala. As the demand for fancier hotels, upscale restaurants and unique nightspots continue to grow along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, current and future business owners must become more creative and outdo their competitors.
There are dozens of restaurants, hotels and bars of all types that currently line our beaches from the Flora-Bama to the furthest point of Gulf Shores, but creativity and uniqueness is what drives people’s curiosity and a new business coming to our beach will surely do just that.
The AC Hotel Orange Beach, a six-story, 100-room Marriott hotel, is expected to feature a 3,500-square-foot rooftop lounge that will be open to the public when the project opens in the second quarter of 2028. This feature alone is different for our area because it’ll be the first rooftop lounge on the beach in our area.
Zach Hoyt, president of Gulf Shores-based A&R Development, which is developing the Marriott-branded hotel, said the rooftop lounge is designed to be the property’s signature attraction and will welcome both hotel guests and the public.
He called it an “experience that doesn’t exist anywhere in the market today.”
“Orange Beach has grown into one of the premier destinations in the Southeast and it deserves a hotel that matches that,” Hoyt said.
Rooftop bars have become a staple, a must have in recent years, drawing visitors and locals alike to enjoy dinner, or a cocktail and conversation while taking in the sights, the vibe and the outdoors.
The Orange Beach City Council addressed several concerns about the venue located at 23370 Perdido Beach Blvd including operating hours and noise and loud bands, but it does seem to have support from the council and will most likely be approved. This location was once the Romar Beach Baptist Church that was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, rebuilt in 2008 and then heavily damaged again during Hurricane Sally in 2020.
Hoyt told council members the rooftop venue is intended to function more as a lounge than a bar. It will connect to eight of the hotel’s guest rooms and have a maximum occupancy of 100 people. He said it is far from being considered a “raucous or rowdy bar” and is expected to close around 11 p.m.
The lounge’s outdoor patio will close around 10 p.m., Hoyt said.
Hotel occupancy continues to outpace vacation rental occupancy in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, according to June destination indicators provided by the local tourism agency. While vacation rentals that typically require longer stays averaged between 50% and 55% occupancy during the spring months, hotels averaged between 74% and 77%.
Beth Gendler, president and CEO of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, called the addition of a rooftop lounge an attractive addition to the coastal region’s growing portfolio of lodging options.
The AC Hotel Orange Beach is expected to begin construction later this year.

MOBILE, AL. A joint investigation by several law enforcement agencies has concluded with the arrest of an Irvington man.
The investigation began in June after a tip about an online child sex predator and involved law enforcement in Alabama and California. In fact, law enforcement in Sacramento received11 cyber tips from Instagram and the Sacramento Police Department began investigating and determined that the person behind the screen lived in Mobile County.
Now, the suspect, an Irvington man has been arrested on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, on child exploitation charges following the investigation into online tips involving a minor in California, authorities said.
Kobe Lee Palmer was taken into custody without incident after Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit detectives and Special Operations personnel executed a search warrant at his residence, officials said.
According to the sheriff’s office, Palmer was charged with seven counts of transmitting obscene material to a minor and two counts of electronic solicitation of a child.
Law enforcement said Palmer sent multiple nude and pornographic images of himself to a girl under age 15 in Sacramento and solicited explicit images from her.
Palmer was booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail shortly before 8 a.m., jail records show.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. Emergencies can and do happen anytime, anyplace and sometimes, one right after the other. Just ask the Summerdale Fire Department which operates mainly as a volunteer department with a growing (AOR) area of response including frequently responding outside of the city as part of multiple mutual-aid compacts that allow neighboring fire and police agencies to respond outside of their city limits to other parts of the county to assist in fires, medical emergencies, traffic collisions and disasters. Almost on a daily basis, Summerdale firefighters find themselves going in many different directions and responding to multiple calls during a 24-hour period. The fire department is physically positioned in a unique fast growing pocket of growth between themselves, Foley, the Foley Beach Corridor and other nearby growing communities.
Nationally, mid-size cities can range from 100,000 to 500,000 in population and may add in the MSA, (Metropolitan Statistical Area) which includes a specific region, to boast the area’s population and are built using whole counties as building blocks linked by social and economic ties. Baldwin County with an estimated population of 270,000 residents and approximately 6-7 million visitors each year, is rapidly becoming a metropolitan area. For years, statistically we were called a micro-metro area but now, we’ve become the Daphne-Fairhope-Foley Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in Alabama, recognized as one of the fastest-growing metro and micro-style areas in the United States. It functions as a single-county metro area adjacent to the Mobile MSA.
For first responders, that’s a heavy load to carry, literally. For decades, volunteer fire departments, county sheriff departments and small-town police agencies have carried the weight and responsibility of providing all emergency services from fire and medical, to law enforcement and disaster response. Obviously that is changing, but is it keeping up with the county’s growth, influx of businesses and the year round, never ending, visitors who have found the Alabama Gulf Coast to be much more than a place for spring breakers and snow birds.
Adding to the stream of steady visitors from January through December is the new Gulf Shores International Airport, the return of the Amtrak train service, constant glowing reports showing up in newspapers, magazines, and across social media, and everyplace else that you look We’re getting noticed more than ever!
These communities have gone from agricultural and livestock farms to booming communities with people, traffic, crime and a growing number of emergencies, and things can and have become hectic for our frontline responders who not only respond to our county and state roads, but who also often find themselves out on our interstates facing large critical situations including mass casualty incidents.
Most of the time, our dedicated volunteers handle these emergencies like pros, but sometimes, understaffed, overwhelmed or without the necessary resources to handle the emergency, other mutual-aid departments must be called in to ban together to adequately get the emergency under control. The same is true for our paid, career departments who regularly work within mutual-aid compacts.
In recent weeks, we have seen numerous emergencies require that a Mass Casualty Incident be declared.
In the early morning hours of July 24th, 2026, a serious motor vehicle collision at Greeno Road and US 98 with numerous injuries had the Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department calling for additional manpower and resources from neighboring fire departments and announcing a possible MCI situation. Among those who responded was the Barnwell Volunteer Fire Department, the county sheriff’s office, numerous ambulances, a medical helicopter and the Fairhope Police Department. It was reported that seven people were injured in the crash.
Even when the incident doesn’t require that an MCI be established, the on-scene command may still call for additional manpower, equipment and resources from one or more departments which could deplete that other agency’s staffing or resources necessary to respond to an emergency within their own community.
What happens then?
In Part Three, we’ll conclude with the plans and processes in these situations and look at the needs of our communities for the rapid increase in emergency calls that they face.

MOBILE, AL – Natalia Mitchell of Fairhope, Alabama, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for tampering with evidence in a federal drug conspiracy.
According to court documents, on the evening of October 8, 2025, a federal defendant called Mitchell on a recorded telephone line from the Baldwin County Corrections Center.
During the call, the defendant instructed Mitchell to remove drugs and a firearm from the defendant’s property and deliver them to another individual. Mitchell stated that she had already done so.
A few hours later, law enforcement officers contacted Mitchell. Although she initially denied any knowledge of the firearm or drugs, she later admitted that she had retrieved and moved the firearm and directed investigators to its location. Law enforcement subsequently recovered the firearm.
Mitchell was indicted for Tampering with Evidence and pled guilty to the charge. United States District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer sentenced Mitchell to 48 months in prison followed by a 3-year term of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama made the announcement.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica S. Terrill and Alex F. Lankford prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
This prosecution was part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative established by Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Through historic interagency collaboration, the HSTF directs the full might of United States law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting the full spectrum of crimes committed by these organizations, which have long fueled violence and instability within our borders. In performing this work, the HSTF places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children. The HSTF further utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove the most violent criminal aliens from the United States. HSTF Mobile comprises agents and officers from, among others, Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with the prosecution being led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. It may have looked like a scene from one of those police situational shows on TV or the scene from a movie being filmed in downtown Birmingham, but for the first responders who were called to the area around the UAB campus on Monday, it was the real deal.
Police and Birmingham Fire-Rescue were notified of a suspicious package near the campus and that it was giving off a smell. Some people called 911 and emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the area.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded to an 811 call to investigate the package and that led to two locations being evacuated.
Birmingham and UAB police also responded to the area, shutting down 20th Street between University Boulevard and 9th Avenue as a precaution while emergency responders determined what the package contained.
BFRS officials later confirmed that the package contained a lithium battery that was “reacting,” which caused alarm and prompted the response.
Authorities gave the all clear soon afterwards and reported that there were no known injuries as a result of this incident.

PENSACOLA, Fla. A Semmes Alabama man is heading to prison for a long time after being convicted of attempting to meet a child in Pensacola for sex and offering to pay them money.
Christopher W. Glover, 47, an employee of the Baldwin County school system, admitted that there was substantial evidence supporting the charges and waived his right to trial by pleading guilty in April.
Glover has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for one count of attempted sex trafficking of a minor and one count of traveling in interstate commerce to engage in illicit sexual conduct, according to the release.
Court documents and pretrial hearings revealed that Glover communicated with whom he believed to be a 14-year-old girl and offered to pay her hundreds of dollars in return for sexual acts in October 2025, but it was law enforcement who was on the other end. At some point, he arranged to meet the “girl” and drove to Pensacola where law enforcement waited.
When Glover reached Pensacola to engage in the sexual acts with the child, he was taken into custody, by police.
Authorities said he possessed more than $200 in cash to pay for the illicit sexual acts.
Glover’s prison term will be followed by 10 years of supervised release, and he will be required to register as a sex offender, according to the release.
The case was jointly investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, Florida Highway Patrol, and the United States Marshals Service.

ROSINTON, Ala. A structure fire in a rural part of Baldwin County Sunday brought a large response from multiple fire departments.
At about 1 a.m., Sunday, July 26, 2026, the Baldwin County 911 Communications Center began receiving calls about a house that was on fire and burning bad. Dispatchers immediately sent several fire departments to the scene and when firefighters arrived, they found the structure to be heavily involved in fire and called for additional manpower and resources.
According to the Lillian Fire Department, who were one of the first to arrive on scene, a total of twenty-two fire departments from across the county and beyond were eventually called in for mutual aid due to the lack of fire hydrants in that part of the county.
The county tanker task force was also called to the scene.
Firefighters working together brought the blaze under control at around 5 a.m.
The home was heavily damaged, including a partial roof collapse and looked to be a total loss.
At this time, there are no reports of any injuries to the residents or firefighters.
It is unknown at this time how the fire started.
The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office usually is the lead investigator in fires such as this.

BAY MINETTE, Ala. Police arrested seven people after gunfire rang out in the middle of the day, Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, just a few blocks away from the Bay Minette Police Department.
Bay Minette Police Chief James Rosier, Jr. stated that one of the seven people shot multiple rounds into the ground in front of a house at the corner of South and Bay Streets,
When police arrived, the group of teens began to scatter but were rounded up and now all of them are facing various criminal charges.
Just two blocks from the Bay Minette Police Department, at a house at the corner of South and Bay Streets, gunfire erupted Thursday.
“These young adults were in the front yard and at least one of those young adults took an assault style rifle and fired it five times into the ground in front of his home,” said Bay Minette Police Chief James Rosier, Jr.
Those guns are now in police custody, along with marijuana and ammunition found in a back-to-school backpack donated by the police department. “These adults are making clear and conscious choices, and if they don’t want to do the right thing, then we are more than happy to provide an alternative, and to us that alternative is the Baldwin County Corrections Center,” said Rosier.
During the investigation police found clear evidence of drugs and weapons being carried by the group and police said that they were all taken into custody including:
Thomas Travell Golden, 19, hindering prosecution second degree, unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Xavier Edwin Nelson, 19, unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Shadonnoy Cooke, 20, unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Brandon Michael Juvenal, 18, unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Brenda Ann Floyd, 19, unlawful possession of marijuana second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Michale Lashay Grace, 20, attempting to elude police and active warrants with another agency.
Maurice Antonio Hobbs, 19, unlawful possession of marijuana second degree, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and active warrants with the Bay Minette PD.
It was the middle of the day when those shots rang out. A neighbor was cutting his grass, kids were getting into a car next door, in the residential area. Rosier said those bullets could have gone anywhere. “The range of that weapon would have carried any round through any house and any wall.”
Those guns are now being forensically analyzed to determine if they are linked to any other crimes. “The people of Bay Minette are fed up with this type of behavior, and it is incumbent upon us to express those emotions to these offenders who don’t want it any other way apparently,” said Rosier.
The Chief said that other charges may also be brought against some or all of seven arrested.

MOBILE, AL. Police are on the hunt today for the person who shot and critically injured a woman in Mobile.
Mobile Police Chief William Jackson has called the shooting senseless and is calling on the community to help stop the violence.
Retired police detective Brian Franklin said almost all shootings that happen in Mobile and elsewhere are senseless, reckless and unjustified.
Chief Jackson stated that police officers responded to the 500 block of Rickarby Street around 11:40 p.m., where they found the woman suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. An occupied home in the area was also struck by gunfire, though no one inside was injured.
“Unfortunately, one of the shots that was fired struck an innocent victim who is stable at the hospital right now and appears will recover,” Jackson said. She does not appear to be the intended target of the shooter.
However, this is just another senseless act that should not occur. Shouldn’t be tolerated by me, the police department or our community, the chief said.
On Thursday, crime scene investigators returned to the neighborhood to collect additional evidence as they work to determine who opened fire and why.
This is an active investigation, and police believe that they’ll be able to make an arrest but they’re asking for citizens to come forward with any information that they know about who might have done this.
