The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency troopers were involved in two pursuits along the Gulf Coast on Friday that led to one arrest.
The first pursuit began after a trooper clocked a vehicle going almost double the posted speed limit and tried to conduct a traffic stop on the driver but the driver fled.
The trooper called for assistance at 11:09 a.m. as he continued to pursue the driver Southbound on Interstate 65.
The driver eventually jumped off the Interstate and headed Southbound on AL 21.
As the pursuit continued the driver made a direct beeline for the Florida state line and Florida law enforcement was not able to get to the Alabama-Florida line fast enough to stop the fleeing vehicle.
If apprehended, the driver faces charges of Eluding Law Enforcement, Speeding, Reckless Driving, and probably a few more misdemeanor charges.
In Alabama, it is unlawful for a person operating a motor vehicle to intentionally flee or attempt to elude a law enforcement officer after receiving a signal to stop. This offense is a Class B felony123. However, if the flight or attempt to elude causes serious physical injury or death to another person, it is a Class C felony.
The second pursuit of the day started in Mobile County at around 7:15 p.m. as a trooper attempted to stop a driver for a traffic infraction.
The driver, later identified as James R Fields Jr refused to yield to the trooper, would not stop, and took off at a high rate of speed in the Old Pascagoula Rd area.
The trooper continued to get the driver to pull over as more officers headed in that direction.
Police were able to get the vehicle stopped a short time later and the driver was arrested and transported to the Mobile County Metro Jail.
