BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
On Tuesday, severe storms raced into Alabama from the west and brought with it two confirmed tornadoes, as it left more than 60,000 people without power.
On Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed that two tornadoes did touch down in the greater Birmingham area.
The weather service in Birmingham did storm surveys on Wednesday and confirmed that an EF-1 tornado tracked through the Mount Olive area in northern Jefferson County, and there was an EF-0 tornado in west Jefferson near Graysville.
Neither twister caused any injuries, according to the weather service’s preliminary report.
There were additional storms later in the day on Tuesday that also produced some damaging winds and hail.
The first tornado was an EF-0 that touched down in west Jefferson County at 4:23 a.m. Tuesday.
It had top winds of 75 mph and was on the ground for just over 12 miles.
The tornado touched down near the intersection of Highway 269 and Flat Top Road and tracked eastward, causing a lot of tree damage as well as some damage to a few outbuildings.
The tornado dissipated about 4:35 a.m. after crossing Lynns Crossing Road, according to the weather service.
The second tornado was an EF-1 with top winds estimated at 90 mph.
It touched down at 4:38 a.m. Tuesday, along Swann Road in Mt. Olive, and was on the ground for 2.85 miles.
The storms uprooted trees, caused roof damage, and left other damage along its path.
Some of those trees fell on homes, the weather service said, “causing major damage.”
As of 6:25 a.m. on Tuesday, Alabama Power reports that 50,213 customers are currently without power, and this figure rose steadily throughout the day, according to Alabama Power.
