GULF SHORES, Ala. If you frequent the Gulf Shores beaches regularly or you’ve lived here for a while, you’re probably aware that for a few months during the winter when air and water temperatures drop, our lifeguards aren’t manning their posts, but that has now changed because it’s officially that time of year!
I saw them and I want to check to see if all lifeguards had been brought back, and yes, they have!
According to the Gulf Shores website site and social media:
City of Gulf Shores – Municipal Government Facebook posts that states that the beach rescue lifeguards are now back on duty.
The City of Gulf Shores has 12 manned lifeguard towers. Tower locations can be found online here: https://ayrs.io/lRgmNL. If you go into the Gulf, make sure that you’re able see a guard!

The beach warning flag system is in place for your safety. Before entering the Gulf, observe and obey the flag system. Beach flags are posted at all public beach areas and lifeguard towers in Gulf Shores. You can also check current beach conditions by visiting www.gulfshoresal.gov or calling 251.968.SURF (7873).

Rip currents are strong forces of water that can pull you out into the Gulf. If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, float on your back, and call/wave for assistance.

Drink plenty of fluids and reapply sunscreen often. Don’t forget to wear your sunglasses!

If you have an emergency, your swim buddy will be able to assist you and/or call for help.

You never know if you are entering shallow or deep waters, so never dive head-first into the Gulf.
Also remember that during this time of the year the water is still very chilly even though the air temperature might be in the 70’s.
On Sunday, March 1, 2026, the water temp was just 63 degrees!
