MOBILE, AL. A former Mobile County deputy sheriff who has already been arrested and fired from his job is once again facing more charges.
Daniel Holifield, a former sergeant with the Mobile sheriff’s office now faces both state and federal charges for allegedly using his position to bank hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra cash.
According to authorities, he is now facing 16 state charges.
And he was served three more warrants for Theft by Deception charges.
Holifield is accused of racking up over $100,000 in overtime pay, and Friday morning, District Attorney Keith Blackwood revealed where Holifield allegedly was when he got some of those hours.
“There were some cases where he was claiming to be on duty while he was actually off duty at a casino in Mississippi,” Blackwood said.
Another count alleged Holifield was double-billing vendors and pocketing the extra money.
Sadly, the one time law enforcement officer continued to pocket ill-gotten cash because of a lack of checks and balances said Sheriff Burch.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that if this is proven to a jury, that this is reprehensible conduct; this is taxpayer dollars, this is private company dollars, and he’s alleged to have stolen this over a period of time,” Blackwood said.
Holifield is also accused of submitting insurance claims for MCSO vehicles and then depositing that money into his personal account.
Blackwood said Holifield has previously been accused of other cases of insurance fraud as well.
Holifield was indicted in August 2025 on 13 counts of theft of property and possession of forged instruments after he allegedly used official MCSO lettering and forged the signatures of three co-workers to purchase 10 cars.
Both Burch and Blackwood said that to have committed the crimes he’s alleged to have committed, Holifield would have had to clear every check and balance in place.
Authorities said that besides the 16 state charges, Holifield is facing a 14-charge federal indictment for bank fraud, money laundering and tax evasion.
Potential, if found guilty on all charges, Holifield could be facing life in prison.
