United Methodists Vote to Close 15 Churches in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church voted Friday to close 15 churches across the state.
“These decisions are never made lightly,” said Bishop Jonathan Holston, who oversees all United Methodist churches in Alabama.
Some say that they’re shocked while others acknowledged that membership has been dwindling for years.
“They represented seasons of faithful ministry,” Holston said. “They’ve come to a close, and they call us to honor the witness of congregations who served their communities with grace and courage and have done this over generations.”
The closures were approved during the church’s annual conference. The resolution includes not only the formal closing of churches but also decisions regarding the stewardship and future disposition of their properties.
“These decisions are never made lightly,” said Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, addressing the conference. “They represent seasons of faithful ministry that have come to a close. We receive this report with gratitude for what’s been and with a shared responsibility to steward these legacies well”.
The affected congregations span all four districts of the North Alabama Conference:
East District: Jubilee, Oak Grove, Childersburg, Rehoboth, Trinity
Mid-Central District: Christ Central, Langston, Mount Oak, Tucker’s Chapel
North District: Courtland, Hollywood, Isom’s Chapel, Moulton First, The Table
West District: Cahawba, Cottondale, Discovery, Restoration Mission, Walker Chapel, Woodstock
