MOBILE, Ala. Multiple law enforcement agencies across the Gulf Coast have seen a substantial spike in police pursuits, and officers say one of the biggest drivers of these pursuits is a lack of respect for both the law and the officers trying to enforce the law.
The fact is, police pursuits in the area have become very commonplace, with at least one a day, and often there are several of them.
ALEA, Baldwin County and Mobile County Sheriff’s Offices, and Mobile Police have all seen their pursuit numbers increase during the past few years.
Mobile Police reported that they had several pursuits on the same day.
The Mobile Police Department recently made three arrests following two separate stolen vehicle chases that both ended in crashes today, both happening at around 4 p.m.
Police officers observed a stolen white truck on Airport Road and attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the driver initially pulled over, but then sped off into a neighborhood, turning onto McNeil Street with a woman in the passenger seat, police said.
Police said the driver lost control when he threw a shotgun out of the truck on Wesley Avenue, crashing into two cars parked behind a United States Postal Service building.
Mobile police officers then pursued an adult male on foot before taking him in custody.
But police said that at around the same time, a second incident occurred that also escalated to a police pursuit when officers spotted a stolen gray Kia at McVay Drive and Halls Mill Road. When officers tried pulling them over, the driver refused to stop. A short pursuit ended when the car crashed into a tree across from children playing at Rickarby Park.
Police took two juveniles in custody in that wreck and transported then to Strickland Youth Facility.
On Monday, ALEA and Baldwin County deputies were also in police pursuits that ended in arrests.
