An exciting proposal for Mobile is being considered by city leaders that would bring a $60 million water park and public facilities project to Mobile County.
The project would be one that would be great for residents and visitors alike. And it would certainly generate much-needed jobs and revenue for the county.
Leisure Sports & Recreation LLC (LSAR) unveiled their plan to the Mobile County Commission on Thursday and said that the complex would be called “Jubilee Park,” and that it would be built on 90 acres at the Sportsplex.
Additionally, other parts of the property would be built out to include adding multi-use sports facilities, a public park, Jubilee Square and Boardwalk, RV and bungalow stays, a hotel, retail shops and restaurants, festival grounds, and an amphitheater.
The 15,000 square-foot indoor/outdoor waterpark and zip line tower would take up 20 acres of the development as well as walking trails and a dog park.
LSAR CEO Glenn Haggerty said the company is looking to make the development a public/private partnership.
Conversations between the city and the developer have been on again, off again but now things seem to be a better fit for all concerned.
“We believe it’s a transformative endeavor,” said Haggerty. “So, we hope that all of you feel the same way. We look for your support as we go through this process and we are certainly open to communication as we move forward.”
The project would create 300 jobs during construction, 50 full-time jobs, 300 – 400 seasonal and part-time jobs once completed, and 100 – 200 indirect jobs. Projections show the development would bring half a million people to Mobile County annually.
Mobile is undergoing some significant changes with the new arena, talks of bringing back a hockey team, and the proposal for a retail/residential area along the river, adding the water park seems to be a good fit at the right time.
But, some might wonder if this is feasible with several water parks already in Baldwin County and just across the Mississippi line.
The waterpark’s projected completion date is expected to be sometime in the spring of 2029.
Leisure Sports & Recreation LLC developed and operates Gulf Islands Waterpark in Gulfport.
