FOLEY, Ala. Another shopping center is coming to Foley, and this time it is being built at one of the busiest intersections in the city.
Developers got the green light to build the Publix Shopping Center at Foley Beach Express and County Road 20, also known as Miflin Road and now, they also want to add a large Circle K to the project.
The store would be 5,200 square feet and have seven two-sided fuel dispensers
This area already sees hundreds of vehicles traveling through it each day, and often times there are wrecks, traffic back-ups and with a new large 55 and over subdivision with thousands of homes also being built nearby, traffic is sure to intensify.
Other projects are also being considered in Foley that add both residential and commercial developments.

PENSACOLA, Fla. Vehicles, especially eighteen wheelers passing across the border from Mexico into the US are frequently found with narcotics hidden amongst the fruits and vegetables being transported to market.
But on Monday, authorities arrested a Pensacola man with more than 670 pounds of drugs hidden among a load of oranges.
A man was arrested after more than 600 pounds of drugs were seized in Pensacola on Monday.
Officers at the Agriculture Inspection Station conducted an inspection on a semi-truck hauling oranges from Visalia, California.
During the inspection, officers smelled cannabis and found 17 duffel bags and five trash bags hidden among the pallets.
Roberto Feria, 54, of Cape Coral, was taken into custody and arrested and now faces a felony drug trafficking charge and is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
Tests confirmed it was 671 pounds of THC cannabis.
Feria could face further federal charges.
The drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

A man accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl and being caught by his wife has decided to forgo a trial and instead, pleaded guilty to federal sex trafficking charges.
According to court records, Joseph Mitchell McDonald’s wife caught him with the 13-year-old girl in March last year. McDonald, 60, of Monroeville, admitted that he bought the girl vapes in exchange for sex.
Originally, McDonald had asked for a trial which was scheduled for this month and, but the prosecution was notified that the defendant had a change of heart and would plead guilty.
Instead, McDonald entered his plea before a magistrate judge, who formally accepted it on Wednesday. He will be sentenced on May 5. The U.S. Attorney’s Office agreed to recommend a sentence at the bottom of the range set forth under advisory guidelines.
There was a legal issue involved around interpretation of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act but the plain language of the statute requires a child to be trafficked in the sex industry for commercial gain in interstate commerce or in a way that substantially affects interstate commerce,” defense attorney Michael Hickman wrote in a legal filing.
McDonald now faces 15 years to life in prison.

MOBILE, Ala. Mobile police officers responded to a church in the city at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a burglary, possibly in progress.
When officers arrived at the First Baptist Church of Mobile, 806 Government St, the caller told officers they spotted a man wearing a robe inside the church and when officers entered, they found the man, later identified as Raul McMillian, 33.
McMillian, from Daphne, resisted the officers as they tried to detain him, but officers were able to subdue him and placed him under arrest.
McMillian was booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail on charges of burglary and resisting arrest.

MOBILE, AL. On Saturday, February 21, 2026, at approximately 6:51 a.m., Mobile Police and Mobile Fire-Rescue responded to a traffic accident in the area of Cary Hamilton Road at the railroad crossing. Upon arrival, it was discovered that an Amtrak train struck a vehicle. The driver, Brittany Williams, 31, and her 8-year-old daughter were pronounced deceased on scene. Upon further investigation, officers discovered the audible signal, flashing lights and crossing arms were functioning properly at the time of impact. The train traveled approximately 2100 feet after impact before it was able to stop. No passengers aboard the train were injured.

Crews with Mobile Fire Rescue and Mobile police are currently working an accident involving a train hitting a car.
Officials with MPD have reported multiple fatalities after a train hit a car on Bellingrath Road near Peary Road.
This is currently an ongoing investigation at the scene.
The roadway at the scene of the crash is closed.
No further information has been released at this time.

MOBILE COUNTY, AL. Authorities in Mississippi attempted to stop a vehicle but instead of pulling over, it fled east ONTO Interstate 10 and into Alabama.
Police said that the chase began in Jackson County, Mississippi, and with the help of Mobile County law enforcement, it ended in Grand Bay.
Mobile County deputies were notified of the pursuit and were able to get the fleeing vehicle stopped at around 6:40 a.m. on February 19, 2026.
At this time, the driver has not been identified nor has law enforcement stated what the reason for the original traffic stop was for.
Mobile County Sheriff’s Office deputies detained the suspect, and he was held for the Mississippi police.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. After the deaths of two subcontractors at a site in Mobile, several agencies including law enforcement and the U.S. Department of Labor conducted criminal and civil investigations.
The investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor found numerous safety hazards at the site where the workers were working inside of a manhole and succumbed to deadly gases.
Investigators found that the employees of Construction Labor Services Inc. were not properly equipped or trained and that the workers were exposed to sewage gases, resulting in the two fatalities.
Investigators with the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said that on August 11, 2025, three Construction Labor Services workers were installing and repairing sewer lines inside of a manhole when they were overcome by sewer gas and became unresponsive. One of the workers regained consciousness and managed to rescue himself, but the two other workers succumbed to their injuries.
Investigators found that Construction Labor Services Inc. failed to properly train their employees in a “confined space entry training program”, and that employees did not have the proper safety gear.
Federal safety investigators also determined the employer lacked confined space entry programs, procedures and emergency response plans, including plans to determine acceptable entry conditions for confined spaces.
OSHA cited Construction Labor Services Inc. with 16 serious violations and proposed penalties of $257,707.
Now the company has 15 business days to respond to the citations. The owners can pay the fines or request a conference with OSHA’s area director, or they can also contest the findings.

MOBILE, Ala. Police in Mobile are reporting that a person armed with a Glock firearm which also had an illegal switch modification that turns the gun into an automatic instead of a semi-automatic handgun, was involved in an armed incident on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
Police said that at approximately 9:00 p.m., officers observed the subject arguing with a male individual near N. Jackson Street and St. Francis Street.
As officers moved closer, they observed the subject lift his shirt and expose a firearm in his belt while gesturing towards the firearm.
Officers immediately detained the subject, later identified as Kelvin Barnes, 28.
Barnes, 28, was arrested and transported to Metro Jail on charges of Possession of Machine Gun Conversion Device and Disorderly Conduct.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. A new veteran’s resource center that was approved last year has opened in Montgomery and Governor Kay Ivey was on hand to officially open the facility.
Governor Ivey said that Alabama is striving to be the most military and veteran-friendly state in the nation.
“I know this center will serve veterans well for many years to come,” Ivey said. “Thank you all for making Alabama an even better place for our veterans to live, work, and raise a family, and may God continue to bless each of you and the great state of Alabama.”
House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) thanked all who made the public-private project possible, including Alabama Power CEO Jeff Peoples.
Alabama is proud of each person who has devoted their life to protecting the freedoms that we have in the U.S.
“You know, the heroes in our country should be our veterans,” said Ledbetter. “It shouldn’t be the linebacker in the NFL or the quarterback. It should be the people that have given us freedom and every night when we go to bed, we can lay our heads down and think of it.”
The center will aim to provide accessible, reliable support to veterans as they transition to civilian life.
State Senate Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) thanked veterans for their sacrifices.
“This center represents a debt being paid and a promise being kept to the men and women who were the uniform in defense of the greatest nation mankind has ever known,” Gudger said. “Rather than forcing our veterans to navigate an endless maze full of dead ends and frustrations in order to receive the benefits, the assistance and the care that they earned during their military service, this facility offers a convenient one-stop hub and a thankful helping hand that will guide veterans where they need to go.”
The new resource center will help our men and women navigate the transition back into civilian life providing the services that they need.

PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. Four teachers in a small county in Alabama have all been charged with child sex crimes, a disturbing fact, said James Turner, a retired police officer.
On Tuesday, police charged a fourth-grade teacher identified as Lakethia Wilkins, on charges of child pornography and using her position for personal gain. The Aliceville Elementary School teacher’s arrest is the fourth teacher arrested in Pickens County in 2026.
Wilkins’ arrest is just the latest in a series involving four different teachers facing charges related to the abuse of minors.
Information and multiple investigations by local law enforcement have led to arrests that have completely shocked residents in this county.
One of the most shocking arrests was that of an Aliceville High School teacher and the pastor at the First Baptist Church of Aliceville. Police have charged 58-year-old Winston Bishop, on Monday afternoon on charges of solicitation of child pornography, possession of child pornography, illegal distribution of a controlled substance, and providing drugs to a minor.
A third Pickens County educator, 28-year-old Antavious Belgrave, a social studies teacher at Aliceville High School, has also been arrested by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.
He also remains in the Pickens County Jail on a $1 million bond. He was arrested on February 6th and charged with felony indecent exposure, three counts of sexual misconduct, three counts of ethics violations, three counts of failure to report child abuse, and three counts of felony distributing a private image.
Turner says that these types of crimes can often go unnoticed in rural communities and that local law enforcement depends on the community to be their eyes and ears.
Those three arrests followed the January 30 arrest of 41-year-old Aliceville High School math teacher Roderick Granger.
Granger was arrested by the Aliceville Police Department following what police described as a “proactive and ongoing investigation” conducted in coordination with the 24th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Investigation Division.
“The Aliceville Police Department remains committed to protecting the innocent and ensuring justice for victims. The public is reminded that sharing, downloading, or viewing such material is a serious felony offense.”
Granger was charged with possession of child sex abuse material, dissemination of child sex abuse material, solicitation of child sex abuse material, failure to report child abuse, and an ethics violation. He remains in Pickens County Jail under a $1 million bond.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. In recent months we have seen numerous bills fly through the House and Senate relating to assisting and protecting law enforcement. The latest, which was signed by Governor Ivey last week was the Child Sex Predator Death Penalty law making Alabama just one of six states that have this law on the books.
Now there are two new bills that have been filed in the Alabama Legislature that could impact how the police departments in two of the state’s largest cities are managed.
Senate Bill 289 introduced in a Senate committee that met publicly Tuesday, would allow the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to assume control of police departments serving class 3 municipalities if they are unable to meet staffing requirements within a certain time period. Currently, Alabama only has two Class 3 cities, Montgomery and Huntsville.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road, said the purpose of SB289 is to offer Montgomery a legislative hand in recruiting and retaining police officers.
“We’re just trying to come along and aid the city of Montgomery to the best of our ability and to make sure that we have adequate staffing of the police department,” Barfoot told Alabama Daily News.
Another bill, House Bill 36, would allow state officials to appoint an interim police chief for up to six months if specific criteria are met, including:
A determination that staffing levels are at least 30% below the department’s 10-year average
A review of crime statistics
Consultation with the local district attorney, county sheriff, and crime victims
A finding that a particular ongoing threat to public safety exists
The interim chief would not report to municipal officials during their appointment period, but rather to the attorney general and governor.
However, some police chiefs in the state have already spoken up saying decisions regarding law enforcement services should be left up to local government and not the state.
Public safety is one of the most serious responsibilities entrusted to local government. While we recognize the importance of strong law enforcement partnerships at every level, HB36 would significantly change how leadership accountability is structured within our city. We believe decisions regarding municipal police leadership should remain grounded in local governance and voter accountability said one police chief.

MOBILE, Ala. The 2026 Mardi Gras parades are over and from all accounts, it was another very successful year for the City of Mobile.
According to the Mobile Police Department, here’s the events by the numbers:
The Mobile Police Department estimates 125,030 people attended parades on Fat Tuesday. Police towed 81 vehicles, responded to 1 lost child, made 7 misdemeanor arrests and 1 felony arrest.
The numbers for all of the parades combined show a substantial increase in attendance and an overall well-behaved crowd.
Police estimate that 1,341,358 people attended all parades combined.
Police said that 383 vehicles towed for various violations.
Mobile police said that they made a total of 34 misdemeanor arrests and 7 felony arrests but did not specify the charges.
Police also responded to 9 reports of lost children which were all found safe.
Mobile police also reported that a rider was detained briefly during the final parade but not arrested. He was detained for aggressively tossing throws at revelers but released. The organization said that it would handle it internally.

ENTERPRISE, Ala. Law enforcement from several agencies is reportedly searching for a young child who went missing from her bed in Enterprise.
Police have issued a missing person’s alert for 3-year-old Genises Nova Reid.
According to the alert, the child was reported missing after she was discovered absent from her bed and a door to the residence was found open.
Police said that Genises was last seen at 201 Apache Drive. She is described as a 3-year-old Black female, approximately 2 feet 5 inches tall and weighing about 30 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair.
At this time police are working leads, and hopeful that she will be returned to her mother son.
Police say she was last seen wearing pink Minnie Mouse pajamas, including both the top and bottoms. Her direction of travel is unknown.
The case remains active. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to contact the Enterprise Police Department at (334) 347-2222.

And to help Alabamians prepare, there is a statewide tax-free holiday to help you to prepare for severe weather. Starting on Friday, February 20th through Sunday, February 22nd.
During Alabama’s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, no state sales or use tax is due on certain items you may purchase to deal with severe weather.

During spring, late February and early March, our area is sometimes prone to experiencing strong winds, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. In fact, over the last 20 years, the state of Alabama has experienced an average of 63 tornadoes every year, causing injuries, deaths and mass property destruction.
The peak of tornado season in Alabama is between March and May, but tornadoes can occur anytime in our state.

FOLEY Ala. Several communities along the Gulf Coast have begun talking about and working on a new way to move traffic southbound on Highway 59 through Foley and over to the beach communities.
According to a news release, plans are moving forward to add a new north-south route that will link U.S. 98 with Gulf Shores.
This new road is meant to bypass the traffic congestion that occurs regularly during Spring Break and all summer long.
The Foley City Council approved the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wetland delineation proposal to continue developing roadway plans needed to extend James Road south from Brinks Willis Road to Gulf Shores.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the city is working with Baldwin County and the city of Gulf Shores to develop the route.
“Gulf Shores did a mile. The county’s doing a mile, we’re doing a mile roughly,” Hellmich said. “We’re working very closely with the county and Gulf Shores to align it the best we can, to impact as little as possible on either wetlands or people’s properties.”
He said the route is also being planned to save as many trees as possible.
“We moved it over one time to save a row of oak trees,” Hellmich said. “So we’re doing everything we can to make it the least intrusive that we can.”
This new route could also decrease wrecks that frequently occur along Highway 59 during peak visitor months.
The mayor said the joint project will allow traffic to move through Foley to Gulf Shores.
“When this is done, this will create connectivity all the way from Highway 98 down to the Gateway Road, County Road 8,” Hellmich said.
He said the city is also developing plans to extend the route farther north.
“Ultimately, when we’re able to open up North Pecan then you’ll be able to get on to Gateway and go all the way to the Baldwin Beach Express,” he said. Now it’s not going to be an expressway. It’s not even going to be a high-speed road. There’ll be a lot of stop signs and red lights, but it is another connectivity effort that we’re doing with the county and with local people to give our people an alternative and a way to stay off 59 and the Beach Express.”
The project will extend James Road south from Brinks Willis Road, across Keller Road to Gulf Shores where it is scheduled to link with a new road to be constructed near the Rocky Road Loop.
The James Road extension is part of the “30-Cubed” program approved by the Baldwin County Commission.
The commission approved $30 million to be spent on joint projects with Baldwin County municipalities by 2030. The cities and towns will provide the same amount of funding to take part in projects.

MOBILE, AL. Three parades rolled out in downtown Mobile on Monday, February 16, 2026, just hours after a mass shooting had occurred.
Mobile police officers patrolled the parade route and stay vigilant, making a number of arrests including four felonies, and five misdemeanor arrests. MPD did not elaborate on the charges themselves, only their classifications.
Police also towed 22 vehicles from no parking areas.
The Mobile Police Department estimates the following parade crowd totals for Monday:

FOLEY, AL. Three Alabama police officers have been shot in the line of duty in one week. The shootings all took place in different locations and under different circumstances. And, all of the officers were on duty at the time of the shootings, performing their duties.
Each shooting was deadly, but by the grace of God, the officers will all survive, according to medical professionals.
Police in Hoover reported that officers responded to a home in the 2000 block of River Lake Drive at 7:49 a.m. regarding a report of a “mentally disturbed person.
“Upon arrival, the 38-year-old man brandished a handgun and began firing at a family member, according to Hoover Police Chief Clay Morris and then at the officer.
Asa Redd Griggs has been charged with two counts of attempted murder. He is accused of shooting the officer in the torso and shooting at another officer with a Glock 19 handgun, according to court records.
The family member struck by gunfire was identified as Glenn Griggs, 71. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer who was shot was taken to a hospital and has since been released.
A special agent with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, was assigned with the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit. MACS works in areas with high drug and gun incidents with the focus of arresting those involved in violent crimes.
Officers with MACS Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a suspect inside, but the driver refused to stop, according to ALEA.
Officers followed the vehicle and the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Jadarrian O’Neal Clemons, got out with a gun and ran into a nearby shed.
Clemons shot at officers, striking the ALEA agent several times. Police returned fire and Clemons was killed at the scene.
The agent will make a full recovery, according to ALEA.
The shooting remains under investigation and findings will be given to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.
A third police officer was shot during an incident in Columbiana.
Mayor Lisa Davis said the shooting occurred while police were conducting a welfare check.
According to police, an officer was dispatched on Saturday, February 14, 2026, to the Columbiana Villas apartment complex on Alabama Highway 25.
As the officer attempted to contact the man, later identified as Ryan Darrell Holland, he began shooting, hitting the officer.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, evacuating the apartments.
Police were at the scene for several hours trying to get Holland to come out of his apartment, and at around 5 p.m., he did surrender.
Holland is being held in the Shelby County Jail currently under no bond.
According to the Mayor, the officer has non-life-threatening wounds and will recover from the shooting.
Nationwide statistics show that shootings of police officers are down but assaults including felonious assaults are increasing steadily.
