Alabama Activates 400 National Guard Members Ahead of Storm

Approximately 400 members of the Alabama National Guard are being activated ahead of a storm system that will include severe freezing weather, snow, and ice affecting much of the southern part of the state.
The activated ALNG members will help local responders during the severe weather and will operate under the direction of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and in close partnership with the Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and local services for the duration of the winter weather response.
“One of the unique things about our Guardsmen is being part of the communities they serve,” said Maj. Gen. David Pritchett, Alabama National Guard Adjutant General. “Stepping up to tackle uncommon challenges is a huge responsibility, but we’re proud to stand with our state partners to see our neighbors through the storm.”
The ALNG, on Sunday, stood up seven of its multi-functional Mobility Support Teams, or MSTs, which will operate out of seven regional facilities from Birmingham to Mobil. That’s similar to an activation of 350 personnel who supported the state’s winter weather response just over a week ago.
The ALNG says its MSTs are equipped for route reconnaissance, right of way clearance, transportation of critical resources, search and rescue, and more and that it’s also capable of rapidly expanding, reducing, or altering its response to meet evolving needs.
