MOBILE, AL. It’s hard to look at and harder to believe that a 200-year-old oak tree split at its base Wednesday morning, causing some heavy damage to a home on Houston Street.
Storms had been in the area for several days, and it’s unknown if the tree was damaged by the weather, but what is known is that the tree, which was rotted, caused large limbs to fall on the house.
DeNorris Lee, 53, who grew up in the house and is disabled, was sitting in the front room when he heard a crash and the house shook.
Another section of the tree heavily damaged two cars.
The Mobile Fire Department was dispatched to the home, and due to the damage, Lee is not allowed back inside the home by the orders of the fire department.
Lee does not have home insurance, and he estimates it will cost $30,000 to $40,000 to remove the tree and repair his home.
No injuries were reported.
