GULF SHORES, Ala. College towns are known for partying, celebrating, and rowdiness, but a new survey shows that they’re also known for some serious crimes, and unfortunately, Tuscaloosa, home of the University of Alabama, has made that list.
According to a new list that was compiled by a group of defense lawyers, the city of Tuscaloosa is one of the most dangerous college towns in the U.S.
Wasatch Defense Lawyers published the “2025 Most Dangerous College Towns” list with Tuscaloosa at number two.
“Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama, ranks second with 149 crimes per 10,000 residents. Much of the risk is tied to areas with heavy nightlife activity, where alcohol-related incidents and thefts are more common,” the article states. “The city’s mix of student renters and visiting sports fans can also create conditions for opportunistic crime.”
The list outlines crimes committed in recent years, and the list was compiled considering the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting system and local police department information from May 2023 to May 2025.
Gainesville, Fla., the home of the University of Florida, was ranked number one.
