MOBILE, AL. A woman charged with impersonating a police officer while working as a private investigating is now a free woman.
The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office that was prosecuting this case has reversed course and dropped the charge against Tobi Lynn Libbra, 50, of Gulf Shores.
Libbra was indicted in August on one count of impersonating a public servant and one count of impersonating a peace officer, according to court documents.
The prosecution made a motion to dismiss the case on Oct. 22.
Libbra was arrested in Mobile after she was accused of telling someone she was an investigator with the state of Alabama in October 2025 while interviewing the person for a civil case involving South Alabama Medical & Rehab.
According to the defense, Libbra repeatedly identified herself as a private investigator working for the clinic, wore her state-issued investigator’s license on a lanyard, and never claimed to be a police officer.
The interview was recorded, and the defense says the recording contradicts the affidavit used in the civil case.
On October 22, 2026, Mobile County Circuit Judge Brandy Hambright granted the DA’s motion for nolle prosequi, dismissing the charges.
The DA’s office said the decision was made “after carefully considering how proceeding could affect related matters” and that dismissal was “in the best interests of Justice”
