MOBILE, AL. An employee working at a Theodore company is charged with stealing her co-worker’s identity and selling it on the web.
Law enforcement was called to the Window World of Gulf Coast after the business discovered some internal theft.
The company is a window replacement and exterior remodeling company with over 200 locations nationwide.
According to police investigators, they found that 40-year-old Melanie Rowell of Pascagoula, downloaded “personal identifying information as well as personal banking account numbers, routing numbers, debit/credit card information belonging to approximately 68 employees/victims of Window World with whom she was employed by……with the intent of selling the information on the black market.”
An investigation showed that Rowell had installed an application on her company-issued laptop that allowed her to access other employees’ computers without them knowing.
A statement from the business in part stated “ “Recently, we became aware of alleged fraudulent activity by a company employee related to other employees. We immediately contacted law enforcement and terminated that person’s employment. We have fully cooperated with authorities throughout this investigation and will continue to do so. We have also notified our staff and taken appropriate protective measures. We are allowing law enforcement to handle this matter and are appreciative of their efforts.”
Rowell is charged with trafficking in stolen identities, identity theft, and two counts of computer tampering but has already posted a bond in the amount of $40,000 and has been released from the metro jail pending her court date.
The charges are all felonies and if found guilty, Rowell could face a still prison sentence.
