SPANISH FORT, Ala. A fire on Monday night in the Cambron subdivision tore through a house and heavily damaged the structure making it uninhabitable.
The Spanish fort and Daphne Fire Departments fought the fire at 32298 Wildflower Trail for hours before finally extinguishing the blaze.
The Spanish Fort Police Department were also on the scene when they realized that the home belonged to one of their longtime police officers.
Spanish Fort firefighters were dispatched back to the address Tuesday morning just after 9 a.m. because the fire had rekindled and were on the scene for several hours.
Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber said “we learned it was actually one of our own. It was a sergeant who has been here for 21 years, a veteran of this department, a resident of this community for a long time.”
Chief Barber doesn’t want to name that officer for security reasons.
“Luckily, he, his wife and his 12-year-old son were able to get out, and they got the pets out. So even though the house is a complete loss, there was no loss of life, which is, obviously, the most important thing.”, said Chief Barber.
Firefighters fought the fire in frigid temperatures while the family stood and watched,
Spanish Fort’s mayor was also among those who rushed to the scene.
Mayor Brad Bass offers assurances that there are mechanisms in place to allow the community to help.
“Our Spanish Fort Law Enforcement Foundation is set up to help, obviously in times like this. Obviously, you hope it never happens, but we do have that in place.”
Police Chief Barber is also sounding the alarm on scammers. “There appears that there is already someone who is out there trying to scam people based on this tragedy…”
The Chief said that a Venmo account was set up for the family, but someone was already trying to hijack it and make it their own.
The Chief said that anyone attempting to defraud this family won’t go unnoticed and will be dealt with.
Chief Barber says the best way to help the family is to drop off any donated items to the police department.
And the best way to donate funds is to do it through the Spanish Fort Law Enforcement Foundation.
Those can be dropped off at police headquarters or mailed directly to them at the Spanish Fort Police Dept., Alabama Hwy 181, Suite 618.
