After our big snowstorm and the liquid, it left behind as it melted, one might think that the ground is still wet, or at least damp, below the surface, but that’s not that the case as the increase of brush fire calls for our fire departments are proving.
In the past four days, fire departments on both sides of the bay have seen an uptick in outside fire calls ranging from grass and brush fires to the larger fields and woods fires.
Two fires that started as a controlled burn got away from those watching it and began burning everything in sight.
One of the most dangerous factors in outdoor fires is from tiny embers that can travel for miles in the wind and threaten to ignite new fires.
Area fire departments say that generally things are a bit dry, and it doesn’t take long for fires to start and burn quickly.
Though no structures were damaged during any of these recent fires, one fire was closing in on several homes before firefighters were able to corral it and get it contained.
