A Fairhope planning commission meeting Monday night was packed with area residents concerned about the proposed new phase of a subdivision that would add more homes, more traffic and all that comes with it.
If allowed, the new phase will almost double the neighborhood’s population.
Residents of the Colony at the Grand brought their concerns and their questions but after enduring the three-hour meeting, left with few answers.
Developers pitched the idea of moving away from building single-family homes and instead building multifamily homes including townhomes and carriage homes.
Approximately 200 residents at the Colony signed a petition presented at the commission meeting requesting city leaders disapprove the proposal.
“The Colony at the Grand has evolved far away from what was originally promised to the city from the inception of the TR district,” one resident said during the public hearing portion of the meeting. “The homeowners of the colony are deeply concerned over the continual deviation from the original development plan and the loss of character in the neighborhood.”
After hearing resident concerns and speaking with developers, the planning commission decided to table the proposal until next month’s planning meeting and is asking the developers to reevaluate and find solutions for potential environmental concerns.
Fairhope is one of the fastest growing cities in Baldwin County and while some residents say that they’re not against growth, they just want it to be measured, and more thought put into it.
