A Florida court has sentenced a Lillian Alabama woman after making a plea deal in a 2022 fatal crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Rachelle Johnson, 61, was charged and sentenced on one count of leaving the scene involving death (maximum sentence of 13 years in state prison) and leaving the scene with serious bodily injury (sentenced to a minimum of four years to be served concurrently to the 13 years).
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Johnson, was driving west on Sorrento Road when two cyclists were riding westbound on the shoulder of Sorrento Road.
Johnson’s vehicle then exited the roadway and hit the rear of the bicycles. One cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, and the other was injured and taken to Baptist Hospital. She then fled the scene after the accident and drove to her home in Lillian.
Troopers said further investigation led to the discovery of surveillance video at a local Walmart showing Johnson’s vehicle with significant damage to the front end. Witnesses also followed her vehicle and helped investigators identify it.
Troopers ultimately were able to track down the driver of the vehicle identified as Johnson and arrested her.
