Baldwin County Fire Departments have had a busy ten days responding to all sorts of emergencies, including quite a few structure fires.
Wintertime nationally is known for having more structure fires because people are using various methods to stay warm such as fireplaces, wood stoves, gas and space heaters and even open flames on their stoves or their ovens, and with recent cold snaps and a snowstorm locally, firefighters too have been called out to quite a few building fires.
Even during the snowstorm itself, the Magnolia Springs Fire Department was called out to a structure fire with several inches of snow on the ground and heavy snow still falling, firefighters brought the blaze under control and got it extinguished.
The past ten days have seen 9 structure fires, almost a dozen brush/grass/debris fires, and four vehicle fires in Baldwin County including:
a condo fire in Gulf Shores
a shed and a garage fire in Foley on different days and at different locations
a grease fire at a restaurant in Foley that was extinguished by staff
a house fire in the Crossroads Community that heavily damaged the home and left seven people homeless
other structure fires were reported in Daphne, Spanish Fort, and Loxley
a structure fire at a restaurant in Spanish Fort contained to appliance area
at least four car fires
and nearly a dozen brush fires
Most of these fires were responded to by our area volunteer firefighters, at all hours of the day and night.
And while this looks like a lot of emergency calls being responded to by our area fire departments, and it is, there were also dozens of other emergencies that these agencies responded to ranging from motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and suicide threats.
Call volumes for all Baldwin County emergency agencies, including many that are one hundred percent made up of volunteers, continue to steadily rise with the fast-paced growth that the county is seeing.
Some volunteer fire departments are facing staffing issues, others are facing the need for increased budgets or a combination of both.
Several of the fire departments are currently changing to a combination department which would employ some paid firefighters working alongside the volunteer staff.
As the area continues to grow, so does the need for enhanced emergency services.
