ROSINTON Ala.
It’s 12:30 a.m., and many people, including volunteer firefighters, are in bed sleeping, though always ready to jump into action on an emergency call.
At 12:31 a.m. on Thursday, such a call was dispatched.
Someone made a call to the Baldwin County 911 Communications Center reporting a multiple-vehicle wreck that involved cars and motorcycles, some deep into the woods off Interstate 10.
That triggered an emergency response from five fire departments, multiple ambulances, county and state law enforcement, and a medical helicopter, all rushing to the interstate near mile marker 61.
Many days, at all hours of the day and night, such calls do play out in this manner with multiple agencies all working together to save lives.
But this would not be one of those times.
The 911 call was a hoax.
Between 15-20, emergency responders all rushed to the interstate unnecessarily and one or more of them could have been injured or even killed trying to help someone in distress.
Each year, hundreds of first responders are injured or killed in the line of duty, and calls like this are senseless, heartless, and criminal.
Police are looking into who made the call. If determined who that person was, they can face criminal charges.
