An employee of Century Bank in Grand Bay is accused of embezzling more $185,00 from her employer.
Shelly Bouncharenue has been arrested by federal agents after an investigation and faces as much as thirty years in a federal prison.
According to law enforcement, Bouncharenue used a duplicated debit card to transfer money to another customer’s account to cover money “she had stolen before from the second customers account” between August 2022 and April 2023.
The theft was discovered in April 2023 when the first customer called the bank regarding two unauthorized transfers totaling $65,000, according to the court records.
Century Bank notified police after discovering some unusual transactions.
Authorities allege that Bouncharenue used the debit card at least 46 times at ATM’s making cash withdrawals, and “to make hundreds of purchases.”
Century Bank stated they have covered the customer’s losses and recovered $135,590.70 from a Bonding company, minus $50,000 representing its deductible on the Bond.
