GATESWOOD COMMUNITY Ala. Rural fire departments never know what their next emergency call will be or where it will take them.
The Gateswood Volunteer Fire Department can be found in the rural part of the county between Robertsdale and Rosinton on County Road 112 and consists of a small group of dedicated firefighters and EMTs, who often find themselves dispatched to a wide range of emergencies. Everything from lost persons, motor vehicle wrecks, fires, weather emergencies, and even river rescues.
In the last month alone, these firefighters have been called to the Styx River repeatedly for flooded vehicles drifting away due to the river flooding and to at least four medical emergencies including three that occurred on a boat floating down the river.
Firefighters caught up with the injured, including one person on Saturday who was injured on the river and possibly had broken ribs, treated them, and transported them from the vessels to dry land where patient care was transferred to EMS personnel from Medstar.
This dedicated group is making a difference on land, on water, and in their community!
