The Town of Elberta has a new police chief after the town council voted last week to appoint Julie Joyner to fill that position.
Joyner is currently a Corporal with the Fairhope Police force but had previously been employed as a police officer in Elberta for almost fourteen years.
“I spent a lot of my career here, made a lot of friends, know the community, know the kids that are now adults, so I’m excited to see where it’s going to go,” Joyner said.
Elberta is still a small town, but we do have our share of problems.
US 98 brings a lot of traffic through Elberta and we’re close to other cities like Foley and not too far from the beaches.
Elberta’s population is less than 3,000 but being in the fastest growing part of the fastest growing county in the state still presents challenges. It’s not immune to some of the same criminal activity that affects bigger cities, Joyner said.
The Town Council interviewed four people for the job before selecting Joyner for chief because she’s a good fit, said Elberta Mayor Steve Kirkpatrick.
Joyner will join Fairhope Police Chief, Stephanie Hollinghead as the second female police chief in Baldwin County.
Joyner will officially be sworn in on January 21st.
