If you’ve lived along Alabama’s Gulf Coast for any amount of time or have been a frequent visitor to the beautiful beaches, then you may have seen the process of restoring the beach every few years.
It’s a process of dredging sand from other parts of the Gulf and ferrying it back to local beaches where it’s used to build up and restore the sand that has been blown away by wind, washed away by sea or carried away by mother nature’s frequent storms.
Dredge barges sit just off the coast of Gulf Shores pumping tons of sand on shore near the 900 block of West Beach.
And while it does help to maintain the beauty of the white sandy beaches, “the purpose is more about restoration Grant Brown, with the city of Gulf Shores, said.
The beaches serve an important role”.
“It’s a natural environment protection, the best way to protect and really the only way to protect the infrastructure and creates the amenity beaches that people have known Gulf Shores for years.”

Not only is more sand being pumped back onto the beach, sand dunes will be repaired and half a million sea oats planted to stabilize the dune system that has all but disappeared in places.
The big machines are currently on Gulf Shores beaches moving sand as part of the local restoration project but will eventually stretch to Orange Beach.
