Gulf Shores Police have made an arrest in a hit and run accident involving an elderly pedestrian that is in serious condition.
On Wednesday at about 12:44 p.m., officers responded to a call indicating someone was injured in the 900 block of West Lagoon Ave. They found a seriously injured unconscious woman in the roadway.
A medical helicopter was called in and the woman was airlifted to a trauma center in Florida.
According to the Gulf Shores Police Department, Gusatvo Licona-Hernandez, from Calera, Ala., is charged with Failure to Report an Accident with Serious Injuries — a felony.
Investigators from the Traffic Homicide Unit and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division arrived on scene to assist as her injuries were extensive and there was little to no information pertaining to her identity.
“Based on interviews and the physical evidence found at the scene, investigators were able to determine that the 77-year-old female from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota was walking on West Lagoon Ave and in a pedestrian crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle,” the Gulf Shores Police Department said. “She remains hospitalized in critical condition.”
Investigators say that physical evidence was found at the scene and through their investigation they were able to determine that Licona-Hernandez was responsible and obtained an arrest warrant for him.
He is being held at the Gulf Shores City Jail.
