BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. It’s no secret that ICE and other federal law enforcement agents from many different agencies have teamed up to make immigration sweeps and arrests.
In recent raids, local and state police have also partnered with federal law enforcement during these raids.
Several sheriff’s offices and ALEA troopers have also partnered with federal agents on traffic stops and they have also conducted license checkpoints.
In recent weeks, more State Troopers have worked with federal ICE agents to arrest multiple people at northwest Alabama traffic stops, part of a broader scheme to ramp up immigration enforcement across the state.
A spokeswoman with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said state highway patrol and special agents conducted driver license checkpoints within several counties, including Franklin and Colbert, on Wednesday, and that ICE agents were present.
Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver on Wednesday told AL.com that state and federal agents arrested several people at checkpoints near a poultry plant in Russellville.
Checkpoints are just one tool being used by a joint operation of local, state, and federal law enforcement, the Governor’s office stated.
Gov. Kay Ivey celebrated the Russellville bust, which she said was a result of a close partnership between state and federal law enforcement.
“I previously directed the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and our other public safety cabinet agencies to work closely with ICE to catch criminal illegals, and this bust is one example of the fruits of our labor,” the Governor said. “Driver license checkpoints occur all over the state and are one of the ways we stop criminals in their tracks, and now, we include ICE agents in these efforts.
“Criminal illegals are not welcome in Alabama, and we will continue using all the tools in our toolbox to keep Alabama citizens safe.”
Driving is a privilege and not a right. If you’re driving without a license or while in the country illegally, that’s a crime, an ALEA spokesperson stated to the local media.
State troopers directed all other questions about arrests to ICE.
It is important to remember that anyone who crosses our borders unlawfully is committing a crime, and without being properly documented, we are allowing drug dealers, cartel gang members, murderers, and wanted fugitives to enter our country unchecked.
As of late July, Alabama was on track to double its rate of arrests of immigrants without legal status from last year. President Donald Trump has set a goal of 3,000 ICE arrests a day.
