The United States has been heavily issuing travel guidance and country restrictions since before President Trump’s elections and recent intel has put even more countries on the list.
New TRAVEL ALERTS now include the Turks and Caicos Islands along with India, Mexico, the Federated States of Micronesia, North Macedonia, Nauru, Norway, Portugal, Palau, Albania, Algeria, Angola, Djibouti, Mongolia, New Zealand, Cyprus and Hungary.
This expanded travel advisory highlights various concerns related to safety, health risks, and potential geopolitical instability, urging travelers to exercise caution.
The alerts provide updated guidelines for US citizens, advising them on areas to avoid or take extra precautions. In some cases, the advisory may also include information on entry restrictions, public safety, and local conditions that may affect travel.
As of March 2025, these travel alerts serve as a reminder to stay informed of the latest government advisories when planning international trips, ensuring the safety of travelers in an ever-evolving global landscape.
The advisory cites crime as the primary concern, specifically noting that Providenciales, where most tourists visit, has seen an uptick in criminal activity.
While the majority of visits to the islands remain trouble-free, the U.S. government has pointed out that criminal incidents, including violent crimes, have occurred more frequently in recent times.
Law enforcement agencies, the advisory notes, may have “limited investigatory resources,” which could make it harder for authorities to respond to or prevent such incidents effectively. This limitation in resources raises the level of caution necessary for travelers visiting the area, particularly those unfamiliar with the local environment.
Travelers are advised to avoid risky situations, such as walking alone or venturing into poorly lit or isolated areas, especially at night. The advisory also emphasizes not answering the door to unknown individuals at hotels or residences, a precaution meant to protect against potential robbery attempts. The travel guidelines caution that, in the event of a robbery, tourists should not resist physically, as such resistance can increase the risk of harm.

Countries Have Strict Firearms and Ammunition Laws
One of the most critical aspects of the U.S. Department of State’s warning is its focus on the strict laws surrounding firearms and ammunition in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Firearms and ammunition are considered illegal, and the laws governing their possession and transportation are enforced with rigor. The advisory warns that even the accidental carrying of ammunition, such as a single bullet in carry-on luggage, can result in serious legal consequences.
Travelers should be particularly vigilant when preparing for their trip to the islands, ensuring that no firearms or ammunition are inadvertently brought with them. The U.S. Department of State strongly recommends that travelers check their luggage and hand baggage carefully before departure to avoid bringing prohibited items to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Those found in possession of firearms or ammunition, even by mistake, could face severe legal penalties, including arrest, jail time, and significant fines. In some instances, U.S. citizens have been detained for weeks or longer due to firearm-related incidents at the airport, preventing them from departing until their cases are resolved.
According to the advisory, offenders can face prison sentences of 12 years or more, with few exceptions. While the Department of State cannot guarantee release in such cases, it is strongly advising travelers to stay within the bounds of the law to avoid these severe consequences. This warning is especially important for those traveling through the island’s airports, where customs officials are known to be particularly strict in enforcing these laws.
In light of these concerns, the U.S. Department of State has issued several guidelines for those planning to travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands. These recommendations are designed to help U.S. citizens stay safe while visiting the islands and to ensure compliance with local laws. Among the key recommendations are the following:
Thoroughly Check Luggage for Prohibited Items: Travelers should carefully inspect their luggage and handbags to ensure no firearms or ammunition are included, as these items are strictly prohibited by local law.
Avoid Walking Alone and at Night: Travelers are advised to stay in well-lit, populated areas and avoid walking alone, particularly at night, when risks of encountering crime may increase.
Do Not Open Doors to Strangers: Visitors should only answer the door if they know who is on the other side. This precaution can help avoid being caught off guard in the event of an attempted robbery or scam.
Do Not Resist Robbery Attempts: The advisory urges that travelers not resist during a robbery attempt, as doing so may escalate the situation and result in harm.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP): The STEP program allows U.S. citizens to receive alerts from the U.S. government about potential threats, and it helps authorities locate travelers in case of an emergency.
Prepare for Emergency Situations: Travelers should make contingency plans for potential emergencies and familiarize themselves with local resources, such as hospitals and embassies.
Visit the CDC Website for Health Information: Tourists are encouraged to review the latest health advisories from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure they are informed about any potential health risks.
Check Travel Insurance Coverage: Travelers should verify their travel insurance policies to ensure they are covered for medical emergencies, evacuation assistance, and trip cancellations.
These guidelines are part of the U.S. government’s effort to ensure the safety of its citizens while abroad. The government urges travelers to consider these precautions when traveling to any foreign country, especially in areas where the safety landscape may be more unpredictable.
