MOBILE COUNTY, AL – The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Bobbie Smith following a two-month investigation into animal cruelty allegations at a property located on the 8900 block of Wilmer Georgetown Road in Wilmer, Alabama.
The investigation began on July 14, 2025, when citizens reported concerns about emaciated horses and strong odors coming from the property. Investigators confirmed the presence of neglected animals. A red roan gelding, “Buddy,” was found severely emaciated, and a palomino mare was also underweight. Investigators additionally discovered a partially burned horse carcass in the pasture.
On July 16, 2025, Smith surrendered the surviving horses. Buddy was placed in the care of White Gates Farm Equine Rescue for rehabilitation, while the palomino mare was returned to Sweet Bay Rescue. Veterinary examinations documented Buddy’s gradual recovery with standard care and significant weight gain over the following weeks.
After a two-month investigation, Investigators charged Smith with two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and one count of Failure to Bury Livestock.
On September 19, 2025, deputies arrested Bobbie Smith. He was transported to the Mobile County Metro Jail.
“There is absolutely no excuse for animal cruelty or neglect,” said Sheriff Paul Burch. “The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office will continue to take a hard line against animal abuse. If you harm animals in this county, you will be investigated, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
