MOBILE COUNTY, AL. Two Grand Bay men have been sentenced to prison time on drug and gun charges.
33-year-old Demetrius Dwayne Powell and 41-year-old Diricka Tyrese McCants were sentenced to 20 years and 12 years in prison on charges of drug-trafficking conspiracy and illegally possessing firearms in furtherance of drug crimes.
According to a Department of Justice news, the men were arrested after narcotics agents went to a location in Grand Bay to arrest Powell on a warrant for robbery, which is when they found Powell and McCants coming out of a shed.
The agents went inside the shed, where they found almost two pounds of pure methamphetamine, crack and powder cocaine, opened vacuum-sealed bags with marijuana inside, digital scales, drug packing material, and three loaded guns.
Officials said once the men were arrested, they called each other in jail. Agents listened to their recorded phone calls, which is when they allegedly heard Powell telling McCants to take the rap for the drugs because of Powell’s violent criminal history.
McCants was already on federal supervised release for a prior felony drug trafficking conviction, while Powell has previous convictions for a stabbing assault and felony domestic violence by strangulation.
A search of the phones belonging to both of the men, showed multiple texts, photos and videos about drug transactions and the illegal possession of guns from January to June 2024.
Once released, both men will also be on supervised release for ten years.
