CALERA Ala A woman upset with another driver over a parking spot at Walmart shot into the vehicle.
Calera Police responded to the shooting at 11:10 a.m. Friday.
Police officers found a bullet hole in the back driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle but the person who fired the shot had fled the areas.
The bullet inside the vehicle was found near a child seat.
The victim, who has not been identified by police, told officers the suspect exited her vehicle with her gun and fired a shot into the car.
An alert was put out to other area police departments to be on the look-out as they continued investigating the shooting. Within twenty minutes the police had the suspect in custody.
Police believe Destini Nicole Rogers changed the tag on her vehicle after leaving the scene, but they used witness testimony and Walmart surveillance video to confirm her identity.
Rogers was placed in the Shelby County Jail and charged with discharging a gun into an occupied dwelling, which is a Class C Felony. She was given a $30,000 bond.
Police Chief David Hyche said the bullet traveled close to a car seat in the back of the vehicle.
“Our country has serious problems when people get so angry over a parking spot that they pull out a gun and fire into an occupied vehicle,” said Hyche. “If a child had been in that car seat, this could have been a far more tragic event.”
“I want to commend the witness for stepping forward and providing information,” Hyche added. “I also want to personally thank our dispatchers and officers who were short-staffed and slammed with calls today. They immediately responded, passed on vital information and made the arrest. That’s how it’s done! I’m also grateful that we have extra bodies from our SRO crew in the summer to help out when we are overwhelmed. We will be working with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office now to charge the suspect appropriately.
