SPANISH FORT, Ala. Another waterfront park is planned in our area and the City of Spanish Fort broke ground for it on Friday.
The funding for the park is coming in part from a GOMESA grant of more than $3 million. That money comes from federal offshore oil and gas leases paid to the state.
The park, which is between the Battleship Park and Felix’s Fish Camp on Battleship Parkway, will be on approximately two acres of land and will provide public access to Mobile Bay near the Tensaw River Bridge.
“It’s so crucial to make sure that while we protect water quality with that money, while we do things like stopping the mud dumping in the bay, we do things to provide access to the water so more people can get close to the water, enjoy what we have to offer here in Baldwin County and this project does a lot to make that happen,” said Alabama Senator Chris Elliott.
“We’re going to have walking trails here. There’s going to be a natural shoreline as well,” said Spanish Fort Mayor Brad Bass. Folks will be able to fish from the shoreline, and there’ll be a pavilion, picnic tables for picnics or birthday parties and people will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The park will include open green space, a scenic overlook and parking for more than 40 vehicles.
Bass said the park will serve as passive outdoor recreation for locals who travel the causeway daily between Baldwin County and Mobile.
The park should be open by the end of summer and will be called Valor Park.
