BAY MINETTE, Ala. Concerned about possible undocumented immigrants working on a construction site in Bay Minette, Rolin Construction, based in Spanish Fort, volunteered to have federal law enforcement come on-site to check the status of their workers.
Early Thursday, federal agents in unmarked vehicles surveilled the site and eventually pulled into the construction area and began identifying workers to see if they had legal documentation.
The site was the construction site of the new offices for the Baldwin County District Attorney.
“It was actually a voluntary inspection,” said County Administrator Roger Rendleman, who was notified about the raid as it was happening and everything went smoothly.
Seven adults were arrested, and one unaccompanied minor was taken into custody after what federal authorities are calling an “immigration inspection” in Bay Minette on Thursday.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is implementing a pilot program to crack down on undocumented immigrants in coordination with contractors responsible for construction sites, and participation is entirely voluntary.
Of the seven adults arrested, federal authorities said one had an extensive criminal history and another had previous immigration violations.
The minor will be reunited with family elsewhere in the country.
In a statement, Rolin Construction said in part, “This partnership was established to support the immigration initiative and the current administration’s mission to combat undocumented violent criminals within our communities.”
“They should be legal, they should have the credentials to be here to do them, and be here, and if you are going to employ them, you need to make sure of that.”
ICE said that they are encouraging employers to use E-Verify and to allow volunteer inspections of all workers.
