SEMMES, Ala. A Semmes police officer is recovering after being shot while investigating a suspicious incident early Sunday morning.
Semmes Police Chief Todd Freind said officers were on routine patrol about 3 a.m. Sunday when an open door was discovered at Bowman’s Auto Air, a business at 7461 Moffett Road. The officers went inside to investigate and then noticed movement inside a camper trailer that was inside the building, Freind said.
The officers called out and identified themselves as police and that’s when a person opened the trailer door and began shooting.
One of the officers was hit during the shooting.
The officers returned fire and struck the man five times, he said.
Freind said the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office was called to assist and were able to talk the suspect — 58-year-old Johnny Bowman Jr. — out of the building after about two hours.
Bowman was taken to a local hospital where he remains for treatment of his wounds, the chief said. Freind described the injury to the officer was being “just a graze across the lower back.”
