VICKSBURG, MS. A second man in Mississippi has been found hanging from a tree.
According to the Clarion Ledger, police were called to a wooded area near Ameristar Casino in Vicksburg, where they found a body hanging from a tree on Monday (September 15) at roughly 1:30 p.m. The body was identified as a 36-year-old white male believed to be homeless, but police have not released the name of the person.
At this time, police have stated that it appears the man took his own life.
The discovery came just hours after Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black student, was found hanging from a tree at Delta State University. Authorities said Reed’s body was discovered near the campus pickleball courts at around 7:05 a.m.
Reed’s death sparked online speculation of a possible lynching at Delta State, where the student population is roughly 52 percent white and 36 percent Black.
However, police and university officials have stated from the beginning that there were no signs of foul play and no reason to be alarmed on campus.
“Based on the preliminary examination, we can confirm that the deceased did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault… There is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death,” the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office said in a statement.
Reed’s body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
