Recently the City of Pensacola installed red light cameras to encourage drivers not to run red lights around town.
A spokesperson for the Pensacola police addressed the new cameras with the media and the city has made a concerted effort to make the public aware of the red-light cameras and how they work.
And while police have announced that no citations would be issued to violators until February 1st, the cameras are active and currently recording violations and in just the first nine days, they recorded 509 violators which is staggering said Mayor D.C. Reeves
“This is the reason we’re doing it,” said Reeves, “This is what you’re seeing. This is what’s going to hurt and kill people.” And not all of the red-light cameras are currently active, the mayor said.
Even though these blatant run-throughs are just warnings right now, the danger of them doesn’t seem to deter some from running the lights so far.
“We have a problem. Flat out we have a problem,” he said. “And we’re putting our neighbors and visitors and our residents’ lives in danger” the mayor said during a recent press conference.
Fines for running a red light will begin on Feb. 1. The ticket for running a red light will cost $158.
