MOUNT VERNON, AL. The Mount Vernon Police Chief was terminated on Wednesday, seemingly without an explanation, though former Chief Eric Pettway said that the town has a right to do just that.
Pettway released a statement saying in part, “As I step away, I pray that whoever assumes the position of chief of police will lead with integrity, remain committed to the truth, and faithfully uphold the oath they have taken.”
Town attorney Jay Ross recently stated that town officials decided to go in a different direction and that Pettway’s contract did not have an expiration date.
Contracts and terminations in general are considered personnel matters, and most agencies do not comment, nor divulge employment information.
His contract between him and the town is not within the rules and regulations of the Mobile County Personnel Board, meaning that the town can end his contract without cause, according to the attorney.
Pettway will receive two months of pay and any acquired employee benefits.
