An argument between boyfriend and girlfriend in the parking lot of the Providence Hospital has cost the woman an eye after the male shot her in the head.
According to police, officers arrived to find that 31-year-old Kanene Young had pulled the trigger during a verbal dispute.
She was immediately rushed to the intensive care unit for treatment. She survived but lost one of her eyes.
According to court documents, Young was arrested by the University of South Alabama Police and charged with assault first-degree, but the woman’s father wants that charge to be escalated to attempted murder.
“It’s hurtful,” said the father. “It was unnecessary. It didn’t have to happen.”
The District Attorney’s Office is looking to elevate the charge to domestic violence first-degree or assault first-degree/serious injury with a weapon, but this isn’t enough for the father.
It was a murder attempt. Why can’t they see that, the father said.
The father said he is going to fight for his daughter until the charge is upgraded and urges anyone in domestic violence situations to leave before it gets to this point.
Young is scheduled for a court hearing on Tuesday, February 25th, 2025.
Right now, Young is being held without bond but during his hearing, that could change and he may be released on some sort of bond and if he is he’ll be required to wear an ankle monitor and be on home confinement but those documents also say Young is homeless.
