A Mississippi Sheriff’s deputy has been shot and killed in Hinds Country making this the fourth US law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in just forty-eight hours.
The Hinds Country Sheriff’s Office has said that two deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance Sunday evening.
Deputy Martin Shields Jr. and another deputy got into a shootout with the suspect at the residence on 15323 Midway Road in Terry, according to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones.
Shields, 37, had worked for the department for just nine months but had worked in law enforcement previously. Jones told reporters that he had been with the slain deputy at an earlier call when the call came in.
The suspect’s wife and another woman were shot while trying to leave the scene and were transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.
The sheriff said that 42-year-old Eric Brown, who was believed to be the suspect, was found dead inside the home.
The other deputy was not injured.
A procession was held Monday for slain Deputy Martin Shields Jr.
The procession began around 1 p.m. Law enforcement officers escorted Shields’ body from the Mississippi State Crime Lab in Pearl to Westhaven Funeral Home in Jackson. Final arrangements are not yet complete.
