An Alabama police lieutenant with more than thirty years of service to his community was killed while directing traffic.
According to officials in Irondale, while directing traffic, a vehicle collided with Lt. Mark Meadows outside of the Church of the Highlands on Grants Mill Road about 7 a.m.
Lt. Meadows was taken to Grandview Medical Center where he later died, the city stated.
“Lt. Mark Meadows was a treasured member of our Irondale family for over 30 years,” stated Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. “He was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant.
Lt. Meadows will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters at the Irondale Police Department, as well as by all of our city employees and citizens. We are comforted in knowing that he is with his heavenly Father, and we will continue to cover his family in prayer as they grieve this great loss.”
“The Irondale Police Department also wishes to extend our collective support, thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Lt. Meadows during this trying time.”
Church of the Highlands Senior Pastor Chris Hodges shared this statement:
“Our hearts are heavy beyond measure. Officer Meadows has been with us since the opening of our Grants Mill campus almost 18 years ago. He is family to us. All our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, daughter, son, family members, fellow officers and the many who loved him. Even in the most difficult and trying times, we know our God will provide comfort, strength and reassurance based on the promise of heaven. We as a church will do all we can to care for his family.”
Several state politicians offered their condolences as well.
“My heart is heavy as I have learned of the tragic loss of Irondale Police Lieutenant Mark Meadows, a veteran and true public servant,” said Governor Kay Ivey. “I join all Alabamians in lifting up his family, the Irondale Police Department and the Church of the Highlands community in prayer.”
“Saddened to hear of the loss of Lt. Mark Meadows of the Irondale Police Department,” said Senator Tommy Tuberville. “Alabama is grateful for his more than 30 years of service to our state and country. I ask all Alabamians to join me in praying for his family and friends.”
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating this incident.
