A fire deep into the woods on Tuesday afternoon proved to be quite a challenge for several of our local fire departments.
At around 1:30 p.m., the initial call to 911 came in explaining that a piece of heavy equipment was on fire and that it could spread into the woods.
The men had been working far off the road when the fire occurred and there were only small dirt trails to get back to where they were.
The Gateswood Community volunteer fire department was dispatched and arrived to find that it would indeed be challenging to get heavy fire engines to where the fire was. The Elsanor volunteer fire department soon joined them and a call for a tanker truck, which can hold several thousand gallons of water, or more was also dispatched to the scene.
With no nearby fire hydrants or other water sources, it was the only way to have the amount of water necessary to fight the fire.
Through the hard work and perseverance of the responding firefighters, they were able to control the fire from spreading and extinguish the blaze before a woods fire could get out of control.
Firefighters were on the scene for almost two hours.
