A casual walk on a beautiful warm day along a river suddenly took a turn for the worse.
A man in his 40’s unwittingly got turned around and became lost while walking through a wooded area along the Perdido River near Marker 20.
At around 4:10 p.m. Monday, the man’s friends notified Baldwin County 911 that the man was lost and that they could not locate him and that he needed help getting out of the woods. And they also noted that his cellphone was losing its charge and was about to go dead.
The Gateswood Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched and immediately deployed firefighters into the woods.
Additionally, a fire vehicle’s siren was blasted several times until the man, who was walking through the wooded area, could hear it.
As the man tried to make his way back to his starting point, firefighters fanned out and at around 5:20 p.m., firefighters were able to locate the man.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and an ambulance were also dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters helped the unnamed person walk out of the woods and arrived safely to the awaiting ambulance at about 5:45 p.m.
The fire department reported that the person was dehydrated but overall appeared to be in good condition.
The combined efforts of the man’s friends, 911 dispatchers, the fire department, and others expedited the safe rescue of this person as the sun was setting and darkness was starting to move in.
