BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. The Baldwin County Detention Center has held federal prisoners, including those for ICE, under the 287g agreement for many years until just recently.
But now, the detention center will process and hold those being held on immigration warrants.
Sheriff Anthony Lowery made an announcement on Thursday that he was able to reopen the facility for ICE holds. Lowery said that the facility has once again been approved as a facility for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) inmates.
After being told that the Baldwin County Detention Center was not in compliance, immigration detainees had to be transported to Mississippi or Louisiana jails from Baldwin and Mobile Counties.
Lowery said there were previously 10 pages of regulations for ICE detainees before and Washington decreased those to three pages.
After 13 years with a contract between the county and the U.S. Marshal’s Service, ICE notified the sheriff in February that he could no longer house immigrant detainees due to regulations, including a required recreational yard. Lowery said at the time that it was proof that illegal immigrants have more rights than U.S. citizens behind bars.
“I followed up and I followed up and I followed up, and Senator Britt’s office promised me, ‘Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is on the lips of everybody up here in ICE,” Lowery said during a candidate forum. “And I’m proud to tell you today, we’re back open for business. We are holding ICE detainees again. So, that’s how I push the state of Alabama.”
Lowery said that as the sheriff of Baldwin County, he intends on continuing to enforce all laws and protect the citizens of the county and those who visit.
