BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. A couple stands charged with much more than just being bad renters or keeping a dirty house.
In fact, other than putting down a few security deposits to lease a home or a condo, they skipped paying rent and then after being notified of an eviction process, they packed up and skipped down the road and started the process all over again.
And they probably would still be running their scheme had a Baldwin County deputy sheriff not noticed that he was serving eviction notices to the same people throughout the county and that kicked-off an investigation.
Dwayne and Erica Dailey now stand accused of defrauding local property owners.
Captain Danny Steelman, the spokesperson for the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said that they were evicted 10 times in the last four years and would cover their tracks by falsifying their credit report.
“They actually reached out to some of the credit reporting bureaus and filed notice that hey, you have us listed as defaulting on rent, this isn’t us, it is mistaken identity, and they actually had those removed where the new landlord would not see that on their history,” said Steelman.
At this time the couple has been charged with multiple counts of felony fraudulent leasing or renting.
However, other property owners may come forward now that the scam has been revealed and their pictures flashed in the media.
Investigators estimate each property owner lost between $5,000 and $8,000, including rent and clean-up costs for damages they said the Daileys left behind.
