Baldwin and Mobile Counties Engaged in High-Speed Police Pursuits
MOBILE, Ala.
September 5, 2024
It’s happened again. This time in Mobile.
Another police pursuit because a driver chose not to pull over for blue lights and sirens.
Mobile police say that they were trying to stop a gray BMW but didn’t say what for.
Witnesses said that the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic along Interstate 65 and at times reached speeds of more than 100 mph and the driver, identified as 27-year-old Willie Baker III also hit at least one vehicle during the pursuit.
It all started around 8:15 Tuesday night as they tried stopping the car near Orleans St.
Speeding north onto I-65 and then onto U.S. 45 in Prichard, police finally were able to bring the chase to an end.
Baker is charged with felony attempting to elude, possession of a controlled substance and three counts of reckless endangerment.
Meanwhile, also on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, law enforcement in Baldwin County was involved in pursuits.
Video taken by a local resident shows Baldwin County sheriff deputies using what’s commonly called “spike strips” that are used to impede or stop the movement of wheeled vehicles by puncturing their tires during one of those chases.
Deputies surrounded the vehicle and pulled the driver out onto the ground.
Recently, ALEA state troopers also have been involved in several high-speed chases including two that continued eastbound down I-10 and into Florida before the drivers were stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol.
