ALEA Working to Remove Bad Drivers From Alabama Roadways

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. Maybe you’ve been driving down the road or up on I-10 and seen state troopers with a big truck pulled over. If you drive a lot, you’ve possibly seen this scenario play out several times in recent months.

It’s not by chance but rather by design.

ALEA, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement including conducting vehicle safety inspections, verifying trucker logs and documents and ensuring that the driver is properly licensed and insured.

In recent months, ALEA along with ICE and other law enforcement partners, have stepped up enforcement along local roads and highways to ensure that those behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, bus, or tractor trailer is in full compliance of our laws, are properly documented, licensed and legally allowed to be in the U.S.

Alabama’s trucking industry and the Alabama law enforcement community say there has been major progress made in the last year removing “bad actors” from our roadways.

Alabama is not the only state who has stepped up commercial vehicle enforcement after several fatal traffic collisions involving drivers who were not in the US legally and were not licensed to be driving the truck.
Some states have a separate commercial vehicle enforcement agency who spend every day enforcing traffic laws, conducting commercial vehicle inspections and arresting those committing crimes on the roadways.
ALEA has a Motor Carrier Unit that concentrates on enforcing these laws.

During the past two years in Alabama, there have been at least three serious and deadly traffic collisions involving undocumented immigrants illegally in the US, driving with no license and who could not read nor speak English.

An ALEA spokesperson recently stated that they are committed to keeping our roadways safe and that troopers will continue enforcing the laws of our state.
