FOLEY, Ala. The City of Foley announced months ago that they would be seeking to build a new fire station to serve the northern area of the city and that they were waiting to finalize the property location.
Now, all of that has been done.
Foley Fire Chief Joey Darby said this week that the property has been donated and is on East Fern Avenue.
This will be the city’s fourth fire station.
The five-acre parcel on East Fern Avenue will provide access to both Alabama 59 and the Foley Beach Express.
The Foley City Council has now voted to seek design plans for the new facility.
Darby said the city will now send out “requests for proposals,” known as RFP, asking companies to submit ideas for the design of the site that will become Fire Station No. 4. Foley is looking for design firms that will work with the city to develop the station design.
“Our next step would be to solicit architectural engineering firms to put together some design ideas for us,” Darby said. “We’ve already put a RFP together and got some ideas about just general scope and think there’s going to be quite a bit of interest in firms that will submit for that.”
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the project will help Foley continue to provide the services needed as the city develops.
“Growth requires planning, and this project is an example of the city working to ensure that public safety infrastructure keeps pace with development,” Hellmich said. “This will improve our ability to protect our residents and visitors as Foley develops. Our medical services are expanding in this area in addition to new homes and businesses coming in. This station will also allow our first responders quick access to two of our major highways.”
Darby said that if the submitted designs work with the city’s budget, current plans call for Foley to design the station this year and begin construction next year.
Current plans call for part of the property to be used for the fire station. Riviera Utilities is also studying the possibility of using the remaining portion of the site for a well and water storage facility.
