LOXLEY, Ala Two immigration raids were conducted by federal and local enforcement at locations in Loxley and Spanish Fort that resulted in 24 arrests.
Authorities arrived at the school construction site at around 8:30 a.m. and used 4-wheelers, a helicopter, and a drone to locate many of the illegal immigrants that fled the area on foot.
According to FBI Mobile, Federal agents arrested 11 people at the site of the new Loxley Elementary School on County Road 64.
One construction worker said that they were just about to go on break when the raid began.
Witnesses said several agents on four-wheelers chased down several fleeing people.
This is the second immigration raid at the construction site of a local school in recent months, according to the FBI.
Baldwin County Public Schools Superintendent Eddie Tyler said the schools are cooperating with federal investigators following a raid at the new Loxley Elementary School construction site. Our contracts with our construction projects require compliance with federal law. At this time, we have no indication of any wrongdoing. We remain committed to transparency and accountability in all of our operations.
“The Alabama Division of Construction Management (DCM) reviews contracts for public school projects that are funded with state supported Public School and College Authority (PSCA) bond funds. As part of this review, DCM does verify that construction contracts require the contractors to utilize the E-Verify program. As part of the verification, DCM requires contractors to certify E-Verify compliance, including by submitting the related and completed U.S. Department of Homeland Security documentation. In the case of public school projects that utilize only local funding (Loxley project is locally funded), DCM has previously issued formal guidance to schools to require E-Verify as part of their construction contracts. The E-Verify process is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and DCM has no involvement in that process beyond ensuring that contractors utilizing state supported funds participate in the E-Verify in the program.”
According to the FBI in Mobile, later in the day after the Loxley raid, the Gulf of America HSTF arrested an additional 13 individuals at a location near Spanish Fort.
The total arrests on Wednesday for both operations totaled 24.
